Jim Averbeck and pictures by Tricia Tusa: In a Blue Room
This is a gem of a bedtime book! Picture books just don't get any better than this. The words and pictures are an absolutely magical pairing. Read this book and savor each word. DO NOT skip a single page...the reward is breathtaking for kids and adults too. A wonderful way to end the day. My Grandaughter Grace (3), hung on every word...I have a wonderful shared memory with a little girl that I get to see far less than I'd like! (*****)

  • Gene Zion: Harry the Dirty Dog

Gene Zion: Harry the Dirty Dog
This story is as fresh and delightful as when it was first published in 1956. Harry is a white dog with black spots. Harry hates bath time. Harry LIKES being dirty! So when he hears the water running into the tub....he runs away. A lttle dog on the loose...Harry romps freely in all the very dirtiest places. Harry discovers that playing so hard is tiring and he is hungry too. He returns home only to find that his family doesn't recognize "Harry the dirty dog" for he has become a black dog with white spots. Children from 3-5 will cheer Harry's attemps to make himself known to his family and applaud the outcome of this timeless tale. (*****)

Possum and the Peeper

Hooray! for the little critters! They put a smile on this sour face and lightened my step. I breath deeply of the sort of warmish, earthy air.  I tramp through my yard on a hunt for this tiny harbinger of spring. Oddly, this year... weather and peepers saw eye to eye with the whole universe...WINTER IS GONE! (at least in VIRGINIA).  If you have a child between three and seven, reading this book with them will become a memory you can share for MANY, MANY springs to come...a private celebration of our new season.....SPRING!

It is even cheap! or should i cheep! cheep!  in paperback!  Try it before summer sizzles away  the "soft sweet sounds" of spring.

Tsunami 2004

The Big Wave, by Pearl Buck, is a good choice for children from 8yrs+ who have so many questions about the disaster in the Indian Ocean.  Written in 1947 about a Tsunami in Japan; The Big Wave is a tender and life-affirming story. We have heard many people on television trying to explain or find meaning in this present tragedy. However, this simple story written so long ago says it all so eloquently. A short volume,57 pages, it is a must read for families trying to understand and connect emotionally with those who are suffering so greatly today.
